"Münchener Freiheit" was founded in 1980 by singer and keyboarder Stefan Zauner and guitarist Aron Strobel. The first respectable successes were achieved with the albums "Umsteiger" and "Licht", which were still heavily influenced by the Neue Deutsche Welle. In 1984, the band made it into the charts for the first time with the song "Oh Baby".

The big breakthrough came in 1986: the single "Ohne Dich (I don't fall asleep tonight)" was in the top 10 for weeks and even climbed to the top of the charts in Switzerland. It was followed by other hits like
"A thousand times you" and "As long as you can still live dreams" and several gold-plated albums. The band
continues to release albums regularly and plays concerts in German-speaking countries.
