David Garrett (born September 4, 1981 in Aachen, actually David Bongartz) is a German-American violinist. The son of the German lawyer Georg P. Bongartz and the American prima ballerina Dove Garrett got his first violin at the age of four. At the age of 13 he was already under contract with Deutsche Grammophon as an exclusive artist; he took his mother's maiden name as his stage name. David Garrett initially received his training from his father, who worked part-time as a passionate violin teacher, but is now a well-known violin auctioneer. From 1990-1991 Garrett was tutored by Zakhar Bron.

He has been a student of Ida Haendel since 1992. From 1999 he was one of the first students to attend Itzhak Perlman's master class at the Juilliard School of Music. Garrett played alternately on a violin made by Antonio Stradivari in 1718 and on a violin made by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini in 1772. Since the end of May 2008, David Garrett has been entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest violinist in the world.
