José Feliciano is one of the few singers who has managed to find success with both Spanish music and English rock and roll. He has been blind since birth due to a hereditary glaucoma. At the age of five he moved to Harlem, New York City with his family. At the age of nine he played at the Teatro Puerto Rico. He could already play various instruments, including the accordion, but then became interested in the guitar. In order to be undisturbed, he sometimes locked himself in his room for 14 hours a day and listened to rock music from the 50s.

He left school at 17 to perform in clubs to support his family. He also made his first professional contract appearance in Detroit that year. In 1966 he went to Mar del Plata, Argentina, to perform at a festival. There he was discovered by RCA Victor, who wanted to record an album with him in Spanish. Feliciano suggested bolero music and the result was the two successful hits Poquita Fe (Little Confidence) and Usté (“You” from Usted). His biggest hit came a little later with "Che sera"...
